Between a rock and a hard place: Sydney firefighters' delicate operation to save trapped cat

A cat appeared to have used up one of its nine lives when it became wedged between two buildings so tightly that Sydney firefighters were called to break the furball free.

The firies have been praised for rescuing the kitty, helping it to survive the ordeal of being stuck between the two structures, despite vets fearing it wouldn’t make it through the night.

“Nothing like being stuck between a rock and a hard place. Or in this case stuck between two buildings,” wrote the Newtown Fire Station, which shared pictures of the kitty’s rescue to Facebook on Sunday.

Pictures showed fire crews breaking through the building wall to free the cat, which they affectionately named Wedgie.

The curious cat was raced to the vet, who told the firies there was a chance the animal might not have survived the night. But thankfully Wedgie appears to have a few more lives yet.

“I am glad to say Wedgie made it through the night and is back home with its owner,” Newtown Fire Station reported.

Many praised the work of the firefighters for going “above and beyond” the call of duty.

Bless you all!” one wrote on Facebook.

Another commented: “Perfect name for the kitty, glad for the happy ending!”

“You all rock. Well done,” a third added.

Last week, a group of teenagers become unlikely heroes in the rescue of an adult male cat, which they found down a drain with its tail completely missing.

The phrase “as drunk as a skunk” has been given a new meaning when a critter was rescued after getting its head stuck in a discarded can of beer a fortnight ago.
