Resident's simple solution to neighbour's 'inconsiderate' bin day act: 'So selfish'
The South Australian woman has grown frustrated with a neighbour who parks in front of her property on collection day. But now she's found a solution.
An irate resident who hit out at her "selfish" neighbour over his "inconsiderate" and repetitive move on bin day has seemingly found a way to stop him from parking outside her house, ultimately blocking access to her wheelie bin.
The South Australian woman complained about her neighbour in a video on TikTok last week, claiming he has "zero consideration for anyone else". She said every week on collection day he'll park outside her property where she's placed her bin, which often means the garbage truck can't empty it.
Growing frustrated by having to call council to rearrange collection, she was informed of a little-known trick that could help stop her neighbour in his tracks. She was offered a 'No Parking" bin sticker which she now has plastered on her bin.
The City of West Torrens Council, part of Adelaide's western suburbs, told Yahoo News Australia that while the stickers are "advisory only and cannot be enforced, they may assist in helping to deter people from parking in front of kerbside wheelie bins on collection day".
"It seems to have helped," the woman said in a follow-up clip the next day. "There's only been one other incident but the car moved that night," she added, seemingly referring to the day she placed the sticker on her bin.
Aussies divided over frustrating bin dilemma
In her initial social media rant, the woman named Helen said it appeared her neighbour was doing it on purpose. "He does it every week," she alleged, and only on Mondays, saying he has a two-car garage and a driveway he could easily use.
She said she's had "no other issues" with any other resident except for this one. "This neighbour has been the absolute death of me since he moved in," she claimed.
However, after watching the video, many claimed there was plenty of space between the car and the bin placed on the kerb and argued her neighbour wasn't doing anything wrong. "He can park there if he wants to," one person said. Others agreed he was "parked legally" on the road.
Instead, some thought it was council's fault for not collecting the bin, saying "it's the truck driver's job to move the bin" to empty it. The woman should simply place her bin on her driveway or on the road so there's plenty of space, they argued.

Ideally, bins should be placed at least one metre away from any cars to ensure they can be collected safely, Yahoo was told by council. In the video, it appears this space was given — at least on the day the woman filmed.
"Our waste contractor will do their best to empty all bins, even if they are behind parked cars. In some circumstances, if they are unable to gain access to the bins they cannot be collected," council said.
"Our contractor will return to collect the bin if they are advised of a missed bin collection. Residents can phone or lodge a missed bin collection form online."
City of West Torrens Council first introduced the bin stickers in 2018. They're designed for local residents to place on their bins to help deter people from parking within one metre on collection day. Last year, 86 stickers were provided to local residents who had requested them. To date in 2024, 51 stickers have been issued.
