Animal rescue called after 300 cats 'hoarded' in single apartment

More than 300 cats were being kept in a single apartment, in what an animal rescue organisation has described as a “perilous hoarding situation”.

The shocking discovery was made at an apartment in Canada, with authorities moving swiftly to rescue 70 of those cats from the home.

“This is the second large cat hoarding situation we have been involved with in a month! It’s very important that this NOT continue,” Toronto Cat Rescue said in an online statement.

“It's a terrible way for cats to live,” it added.

“Unsterilised cats breed prolifically, and with only a nine week gestation things get out of control VERY quickly.”

The rescued cats and kittens are now in foster care and are said to be doing well.

The felines will be desexed and vaccinated before they are put up for adoption.

In March, Toronto Cat Rescue was called in after at least 105 cats were found inside a local home, CTV News reported.

Residents of the Canadian city are allowed a maximum of six cats in one home to prevent pet over-population, the Toronto Cat Rescue said in a reminder.
