After Florida’s vote put Trump over the top in the 1,250 delagates needed, the sound of Celebration played through the Fiserv Forum.

This is the third time that Trump has won the GOP nomination, but a sharp contrast to the first. On the first day of the convention in 2016, there was still delegate turbulence over the rules for the convention. Days later, one of Trump’s rivals for the nomination that cycle, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), gave a speech in which he told delegates to “vote their conscience” and declined to endorse his candidacy. Cruz later did, and has a speaking slot later this week at this convention.

This convention is in full control of Trump and his team, to the point where some delegates booed the name of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), who announced the delegate vote for his delegation.

McConnell had been a key ally in appointing judges and declined to vote or his impeachments. But McConnell also delivered a highly critical statement about Trump and his role in the January 6th attack on the Capitol. He has not been among the list of speakers this week.
