Renter shocked by new detail in apartment building: 'So frustrating'
The fed-up Sydney tenant complained online about being 'constantly advertised to', saying now he can't escape it, even at home.
A fed-up renter has shared his "frustration" after finding digital screens installed around his apartment complex, which are used to display building and general news updates as well as paid advertisements.
The Sydney-based tenant shared online this week that he felt the new additions to the complex were overkill, saying "we're constantly being advertised to throughout the day and now I can add while waiting for the lift in my own apartment building to that list".
"It makes me feel like I'm in a Mirvac-owned corporate property more than my own dwelling," he wrote.
"Has anyone else seen these in their buildings? Presumably strata is getting a kickback, but as a renter, I doubt any such earnings would ever translate to a rent decrease. This is super frustrating."
Australians blast 'disgusting' apartment complex ads
The Newtown renter, known online as Tim, shared an email from his building manager in which it states the screens will be used for live updates, news, sport, weather, art and advertisements. "Habitat Channel contractors will be on-site today installing the screens in each foyer," the email read. "[They] will be operational in the coming days."
Responders shared Tim's annoyance, with many unleashing in the comments. "Put a piece of paper over it. I can not believe how much advertising is pushed onto us in society. It's f***ing disgusting," one passionate person commented.
"Love how 'advertisements' comes last on the list like it's the least important — c'mon you're not fooling anyone guys," said another. "Your rates are about to increase," another person theorised.

"What a horrible idea," said someone else. Others agreed the screens were a "waste of money" — but one person said they probably weren't even paid for by strata, nor the building developer.
"Last I saw the buildings don't pay for it except for the power and internet to run them and the screens are cheap as, and paid for by advertisers," they said, adding that "my real beef is that they barely show the actual notices."
Yahoo News Australia sought comment from Habitat Channel on numerous occasions but the company did not respond to requests for comment.
