Region hit by another earthquake
An earthquake has shaken the NSW Hunter Valley, just a month after the region was hit by an earlier tremor.
GeoSciences Australia said a 3.0 magnitude earthquake was felt in Muswellbrook at a depth of 0.79km at 3.27pm on Monday.
Monday’s earthquake comes just a month after the nearby town of Denman experienced a 5.0 magnitude earthquake 10km.
More than 20 people reported Monday’s quake to Geosciences Australia.
It’s the latest in rumbles in the region over the past month, with the largest – a 5.0 magnitude
earthquake on August 23 – shaking the region so hard the local mayor “thought the roof was about to cave in”.
Muswellbrook Shire Council mayor Steven Reynolds said he was lying in bed when the house shook hard.
“I tell you what, I thought the roof was coming down on me,” he said last month.
“You couldn’t miss it, it was big.
“We have the blasts here from the mines and I immediately knew it was nothing like that.
“I thought for sure it was an earthquake and there could have been some severe damage.”
Muswellbrook has experienced six earthquakes with a magnitude above 1.5 in the past 12 months, according to earthquaketrack.com.au.
