‘Refugees welcome here’: Counter protesters gather in Sheffield as far-right demonstration falters
Hundreds of people chanted “refugees are welcome here” as counter-protesters gathered in Sheffield amid fears of a far-right demonstration on Wednesday evening (7 August).
Groups also gathered in other areas of the country including Walthamstow, east London, Bristol, Brighton and Liverpool.
The appearance of peaceful anti-racism demonstrators quashed fears of further violent disorder, despite the threat of more than 100 planned protests.
In Sheffield, around 500 protesters gathered on the streets, some holding signs with messages including “say no to racism” and “refugees bring joy” as others chanted.
