- Here are some quick facts you probably didn't know about snake bites. An average of two people die from snake bites in Australia every year. Snakes are protected in Australia and can only be killed if they threaten life.

Most snake bites occur when people interfere with them. Over 140 species of snake live in Australia, but only 12 are toxic enough to kill humans. Australia is home to the Indian taipan, the world's deadliest snake. Between 81,000 and 138,000 people die from snake bites each year, 45,000 of which are in India.
