The Queen has accepted Boris Johnson's resignation as British prime minister during a meeting at her Balmoral Castle in Scotland, a

Buckingham Palace statement says.

Earlier on Tuesday Johnson gave a farewell speech outside No. 10 Downing Street in London saying he gave his full backing to the next prime minister, Liz Truss.

Johnson, who was forced out of office by his own Conservative Party over a series of scandals, urged the country to come together and back his successor.

She is set to meet the Queen who will ask her to form a new government.

Truss will be the fourth Conservative prime minister in six years.
