How embarrassed man's BMW ended up in the Brisbane River

The owner of a BMW has watched his car sink in the Brisbane River while trying to retrieve his jet ski at low tide.

Queensland Water Police and dive squad members had to assist the driver of the BMW 5 Series after his car became completely submerged two metres under the surface of the river at the public boat ramp at Colmslie Reserve in Brisbane's east on Tuesday about 7.30pm.

In a blog post on the Queensland Police media page, Senior Constable Gene Hill said while the BMW was in gear with the handbrake on the “slippery nature” of the boat ramp, the car slipped down.

“Despite gallant and frantic attempts by the owner to jump into the BMW and drive it out at this time, he could not stop the embarrassing inevitable,” Snr Const Hill wrote.

“The BMW floated off before swinging around and sinking to the muddy bottom.”

Police divers free-dived and managed to secure the towing cable to the trailer. It allowed a tow truck to pull the car back to the surface.

“This was to the interest and amusement of the crowd of spectators that had gathered to watch the goings on,” Snr Const Hill wrote.

“The good news is that despite a bruised ego, the owner was not injured and the incident was ruled an unfortunate accident by investigating police.

“Oh, and the jet ski survived unharmed. Take care out there.”

Snr Const Hill added the incident came as a reminder for people to be careful on boat ramps.

“Not only could you slip over and hurt yourself, you may also lose your wheels in embarrassing fashion,” he said.
