'He's the best thing in the street': Family fights to keep their miniature pet pig

A Brisbane family is fighting to keep their miniature pet pig after their local council deemed their property too small for swine.

But the rest of the suburban Logan street is going the whole hog to keep him, with hundreds already signing a petition to let Shorty stay.

Like any pampered pet, Shorty likes to go for walks, sleep indoors and do tricks for food.

But this little piggy could be bacon if Logan City Council has its way.

Inspectors have issued a notice ordering his family to give him up because local laws state pigs can't be kept on properties smaller than 2000 square metres.

"In a piggery there's five pigs in a 3x3 pen - our pig's in a 600 square metre yard and a house," disgruntled owner Kyle said.

However Kyle, Melissa and their kids have the support of their local community, with an online petition already gaining hundreds of signatures.

"He's the best thing in the street," neighbour Neil Margetson said.

"He's brought the whole neighbourhood together, so as far as I'm concerned you can't beat that.

"I wish more people had pigs."

Shorty is a miniature pig, which is why his family want council to make an exception.

He won't grow any bigger than he already is, and is smaller than nearby neighbours' dogs.

But most importantly, he is a dearly loved member of the family, bringing them a daily dose of joy.
