Sunshine Coast school band's 'smoko' song watched by millions online

A very Australian song about having a smoke break has gone viral on social media.

School band The Chats may only have one video clip but they've gained attention from people across the globe for their song 'Smoko'.

The trio, from Saint Teresa's Catholic College on the Sunshine Coast, have received almost 745,000 views on YouTube and 1.6 million on Facebook group Modern Vintage Australia.

"I couldn't believe it. I kept refreshing the page and just thought 'is this true?'," Josh Price, who plays lead guitar, told Seven News.

Eamon Sandwith plays the bass and sings while Matt Boggis is on the drums.

The group have only been together 18 months but already have about 20 original songs with titles including 'Temperature', 'Pub Feed' and 'Bus Money'.

"We thought 'why don't we start a band?' so we did," Eamon said.

The boys have already done a small tour up and down the Queensland coast but have plans to take it to Melbourne to see where it goes.

People on social media are loving it with many commenting on how Aussie the music clip and their style is.

"Aussie rock is a beautiful thing. Greetings from Vancouver Island, Canada," one person wrote.

"This '80s style. From the hair, to the camera work, to the sound. So mint ," another person said.

"This looks like it was filmed in 1996. Perched atop his milk crate throne. Brings tears to my sun dried eyes," another person wrote.

Many have said they will even be sending it to Triple J for the Hottest 100.
