Cairns mum gives birth in bathroom while husband sleeps, wakes him up to see baby
Water births are nothing unusual, but a delivery in the shower came as a shock for Jodie Taylor.
The Queensland mother gave birth in her bathroom so quickly and unexpectedly her partner slept through his daughter's arrival.
Dad Robert was oblivious to the emergency until the brave mum walked in holding their baby.
"I was just keeping an eye on the time and seeing where we were at and then she decided to surprise me," Jodie told 7 News from her hospital bed.
Dad was in the same house at Holloways Beach, but fast asleep and with no idea an emergency was unfolding in a nearby room.
"The aircon was on and the door was closed, so he probably couldn't hear me even though I was yelling out," Jodie said.
So she was completely on her own when she welcomed Lucy Ina May into the world.
"I had her, and then I walked into the room with a little baby - and that's when he got up," she said.
The mother-of-five had been having contractions since 3am, but it wasn't long before the 20-minute intervals between contractions disappeared.
As her contractions increased, Jodie dialled triple-0.
"I thought, 'no point in going to the hospital or ringing the ambulance', because by the time I would have got there, I would have had her anyway," she said.
Coming four days earlier than expected, it was a textbook birth - just not where she had planned.
