Former teacher in court after allegedly slashing baby grandson's face with meat cleaver

A former Brisbane school teacher has appeared in court on Wednesday charged with the attempted murder of her four-month-old grandson.

The 64-year-old allegedly used a meat cleaver to slash the baby boy's face as he slept in his cot on Tuesday morning.

The mother was awakened by her child's chilling screams and walked in to find the baby with cuts to his cheek, neck and forehead.

But the most chilling fact was that the alleged attacker was the boy's grandmother, a former schoolteacher who they had been staying with while visiting from Sydney.

The baby was rushed to hospital yesterday morning, where he remains in a serious condition, having undergone extensive surgery throughout the day.

First responding officers struggled to cope with the horrific scenes they discovered upon entering the suburban home.

Seven News understands the grandmother has no recollection of the attack, and her mental health had been deteriorating for the past few years.

The woman's lawyer Glen Cranny did not apply for bail for his client when she appeared briefly at Brisbane Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

"There's some days needed to allow for some assessments to be conducted," he told the court, confirming outside they were to do with her mental health.

While doctors expect that the four-month-old infant will make a full recovery, he will have to live with the scars for the rest of his life.
