Fears woman, 79, missing from aged care facility has been taken by a crocodile

Police fear an elderly woman missing at Port Douglas in Far North Queensland may have been taken by a crocodile.

Anne Cameron wandered away from a nursing home on Tuesday afternoon, prompting an extensive police search.

It was thought that the 79-year-old, who is new to the area, had become lost after going for an afternoon walk.

"We located a number of items including clothing and a walking stick with her name on it," Acting Inspector Ed Lukin of Queensland Police said.

Nearby, what have been described as biological remains were also found.

Those remains are now being forensically examined in Cairns.

The woman was reported missing from the OzCare Facility in Port Douglas but extensive searches involving 40 SES volunteers found no trace of her.

"We cannot rule out the possibility of a croc attack," Act Insp Lukin said.

The search is continuing, with the hope that Mrs Cameron is still alive.

Rangers will spend Thursday night on the river looking for large crocodiles.

Relatives of the 79-year-old grandmother told police she was new to the area and suffered from early stage dementia.
