Tourist, 21, suffers serious burns after falling into fire three times at Queensland music festival

A young French tourist has serious burns to 40 per cent of her body after falling into a campsite fire three times at a central Queensland music festival while under the influence of hallucinogenic drugs.

The 21-year-old was taken by helicopter to Mackay Base Hospital on Sunday with severe burns and cuts from a barbed wire fence after the incident occurred at Mushroom Valley festival, north of Mackay in the early hours of Sunday.

"The injured woman was conscious as her blistering burns were wrapped and treated by paramedics," the RACQ CQ Rescue service said in a statement.

It's understood the woman was under the influence of the drugs LSD and ecstasy at the time of the incident.

A statement from festival organisers expressed their sympathies to the young woman and said the safety of festival patrons was their "highest priority".

The festival's website declares drugs are not allowed at the festival but also states festival goers can pay to be tested for drugs and alcohol before leaving the festival.

It also states there will only be one fire allowed on site and campfires are prohibited.

It comes one month after a 41-year-old man died after running into a giant burning sculpture at the Burning Man festival in the United States.

Aaron Joel Mitchell, 41, broke through a two-layer security perimeter during the Man Burn event in which a giant, wooden effigy is set ablaze.

Confronting images captured the moment Mr Mitchell sprinted into the flames before quickly tripping over as several fire fighters watched on in horror.

The construction worker was eventually rescued and airlifted to the UC Davis hospital burns centre in California but died soon after from his injuries.
