Elderly couple straps caged puppy to roof of car as they drive 110km/h

An elderly couple have been criticised on social media for strapping their puppy's cage to the roof of their car and driving on a 110km/h highway.

Photos of the small brown puppy were taken on Queensland's Bruce Highway and posted to Facebook by a concerned witness on Saturday.

They said the animal had no shelter in the cage and imagine it was "terrified" at travelling more than 100km/h.

The witness said the 4WD was on the highway for more than an hour and a half.

"[The] second photo shows crate mat blown up and poor puppy infront of it taking the full force of the wind," the Facebook post read.

The woman who posted the photos said the Toyota Prado was travelling between between Gin Gin and Maryborough.

Many commented on the post saying they were shocked the puppy was not inside the vehicle.

"Like why own a 4WD if you dont possess a brain to make use of it," one person said.

"Horrible for his ears! He was probably deaf after the trip," another said.

But some argued the cage on top of the vehicle would be similar to having the dog secured in a trailer.

The RSPCA are aware of the incident and are investigating.

"Thank you to all concerned parties for sharing the incident seen on Facebook earlier this morning," they wrote on Facebook.

"This has been reported from a first party source and our RSPCA Qld Inspectors are currently investigating the matter further."
