Baby whale stranded off Queensland coast dies

A baby whale found stranded on a beach at Hervey Bay in Queensland has died.

Locals worked to keep the sick calf shaded and wet, but it couldn't be saved.

Meanwhile, a humpback whale stuck on a sandbank near Moreton Bay managed to free itself.

The 10 metre mammal got into trouble in shallow waters at Peel Island on Sunday morning.

Luckily, it was able to refloat itself at high tide.
