WATCH: Mother koala rescues joey caught in barbed wire

A touching rescue attempt by a koala to save her joey that is tangled in barbed wire on the Sunshine Coast has been caught on camera.

Two videos, posted to YouTube earlier this month by Sue Moxon, show the little bub in a distressing situation - with the fur near its neck snagged on the fence.

In the first clip the joey's mother reaches out to her baby who appears to become more agitated as its unable to break free.

At one point the mother seems to pat the joey to offer reassurance and also rests her head on its head in a comforting manner.

The caption to the first video reads: "This little koala had its fur snagged on barbed wire. Local wildlife rescue were called but thankfully it was able to free itself without injury after a little bit of help from its mother!"

The woman who took the videos tried to help but was kept back by the protective mother.

A wildlife expert was called but thankfully the baby was untangled quickly.

"The baby koala frees itself and reunites with mum!" the caption to the second video reads.

The second video begins with the joey still stuck on the fence, but once it is free it climbs back up the tree, where it snuggles into its mum and latches onto her.
