'Terrified' woman uses seven iron to fend off vicious kangaroo

A Gold Coast woman has used her golf clubs to wrestle off an angry kangaroo.

The rogue roo attacked Liya Chan's head and body when she came to the aid of another victim.

She believes it was trying to protect its joey.

"I tripped over and he jumped up onto my face and I tried to protect [myself with a] seven iron,” Ms Chan told 7 News.

The roo first attacked a man before turning its claws on Ms Chan, leaving nasty cuts to her back, legs and arms and a deep laceration on her head.

The roo approached her and a group of golfers at Hope Island this morning.

Kangaroos aren't unusual on Hope Island but Ms Chan says this was the first time she's seen one become aggressive.

Sporting six new stitches, Ms Chan said she "was terrified" when the powerful beast lashed out.

Queensland Ambulance Service senior operations supervisor Bill Houghton said the woman came to the man's rescue after the marsupial tried to attack him.

"The kangaroo retaliated and attacked the female patient," he said on Tuesday.

Mr Houghton said Australia had a lot of potentially dangerous animals and it was important for people to be cautious when they were in open spaces.

"Be mindful of their surroundings because of snakes, kangaroos, spiders," he said.
