Police end Lockyer Valley siege, shooting dead gunman who killed Queensland cop

The police siege in the Lockyer Valley is over and the gunman responsible for a police officer's death has been killed.

Rick Maddison, who allegedly killed Senior Constable Brett Forte on Monday afternoon, attempted to make a run from the farmhouse he had been cornered in for more than 20 hours.

Described as a "psycho when it comes to guns", Maddison made a desperate dash before police opened fire.

It's believed he was shot in the chest and died from his wounds just after 11am on Tuesday morning.

Police started CPR and medical treatment but their efforts were in vain.

Assistant Commissioner Tony Wright told reporters Maddison was “challenged by police”.

“At that point in time, he has fired at those police. Specialist police have returned fire. The male person has been shot and [he] has been declared deceased at the scene.”

“As you can understand, it’s an extremely traumatic time for that family. Our thoughts and prayers are also with the extended police family, the colleagues and friends of Brett who are, at this time, going through a range of experiences, personal experiences, and feelings.”

Previously charged with torture and other offences, Maddison evaded police in a traffic stop at Seventeen Mile just before 2pm on Monday.

He gunned down Sen Const Forte during the police pursuit and also fired at other officers, police vehicles and a police helicopter.

“A hero lost his life today,” state police minister Mark Ryan said in a statement.

More to come.
