Gold Coast driver sought after hit-and-run on child

Police are searching for a driver who failed to stop after hitting an eight-year-old boy on the Gold Coast.

The young boy was crossing an intersection at Benowa around 8.15am on Thursday when he was struck by a turning orange hatchback.

Footage of the incident shows the car stopping briefly, only to drive off when the boy limps past the car.

Police say not only did the driver fail to assist the boy, who required hospital treatment for his leg injury, the driver also failed to call emergency services.

"Anyone involved in a traffic incident like this is obliged to stop at the scene and render assistance," Acting Senior Sergeant Josh Gunter said.

“I would encourage the driver of the vehicle involved or anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward and speak with police.

“It is also a timely reminder for drivers to be vigilant in and around school zones,” he continued.

Following the collision, according to Queensland Police, the car drove off in a northern direction.

Police are appealing for any witnesses or those with dash cam footage to come forward.
