Rockhampton locals were left heartbroken on Tuesday morning as a kangaroo fleeing floodwaters died in a man's arms after being hit by a car.

As the flood-hit Queensland town deals with the aftermath of Cyclone Debbie, one female kangaroo was reportedly left panicked as she bounced all over the roads in search of higher ground.

Onlookers watched on in horror as the roo was struck by a car on Quay Street, before they rushed to her aid.

Police were flagged down and helped direct traffic as a man was pictured holding the dying kangaroo in his arms.

A vet was called in but the kangaroo passed away before they could arrive.

It comes just one week after a cockatoo that was stripped of its feathers during the cyclone died.

Affectionately named Debbie, she was buried in the same forest she was found in.
