Tourist dies snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef

A tourist has died on a snorkelling trip about 40km off the Cairns coast despite desperate efforts to revive him.

The man, in his 60s, was pulled from the waters of Moore Reef around 12.15pm (AEST) on Wednesday.

CPR was performed on the man but he couldn't be revived.

It is believed the man was from the UK and that he was snorkeling at the time of the incident.

Police will now prepare a report for the coroner.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday afternoon a 43-year-old female snorkeller was reportedly resuscitated by lifeguards on Green Island.

It is believed she was pulled unconscious from the water at a beach which was not patrolled.

The Cairns Post reports that the woman was in a critical condition when she was taken to Cairns Hospital via helicopter.

The woman is now thought to be in a stable condition, a spokesperson for the hospital said.
