Homeless man searching for work helped by kind woman on the street

A homeless man who was "left high and dry" after moving to Melbourne from Perth for a job, has been given a helping hand from a kind woman who noticed him on the street.

Sherryn Jackson said she was taking her daughter to an appointment on Monday and was going up Swanston St when she saw Barry sitting on the pavement in the hot conditions.

He had a sign saying he had moved to the city three weeks ago and that he was desperate for work, she said.

Ms Jackson claimed Barry, 65, had applied for a job and was told he had received it, so he moved from Perth to Melbourne. But when he arrived, the job had been given to someone else.

Ms Jackson said he "didn't want a handout he just wanted a job."

In his plea for help, Barry said he was now homeless and wrote that he has a HR truck license and would do anything, including clean toilets.

His sign read: "I just want to make a new life so if anybody can help it would be great.

"Just give me a go please."

Sherryn Jackson told 7 News Online: "He's taking the initiative on a hot day in the middle of Melbourne to find himself a job."

Ms Jackson said due to his determination she told Barry to write his mobile number on the sign.

She then took a photo of him and shared it to a local Facebook page, asking if anyone could help him find work.

She said the response has been overwhelming and more than 300 people have commented on the picture.

On Tuesday morning Barry messaged Ms Jackson to update, letting her know he had been provided temporary accommodation.

She said he has also been offered several job opportunities, with six interviews lined up.

Ms Jackson said she was confident he will have a job by the end of the day.
