'Terrible scene': Teen hands himself into police following death of woman

A teenager has handed himself into Queensland Police after a woman died following an alleged assault in her home.

On Thursday, police launched a major investigation following the death of the woman, in what was described as a "very grisly scene" in Deeragun, a suburb of Townsville.

Regional Crime Coordinator Superintendent Ray Rohweder said: "It would appear that a 59-year-old woman has been assaulted in her home."

"The woman has received significant head injuries."

Police were called to the address on Innes St at about 12.15 on Thursday morning, following a reported assault of a woman.

In a statement to media, police confirmed they had spoken with neighbours, who claimed they heard a commotion at the property.

"Police received a call just after midnight last night that a woman was in distress at the address here," Supt Rohweder said.

"It was a terrible scene. It was a very grisly scene."

Emergency crews treated the woman for her injuries, however the effort to revive her was unsuccessful.

"Due to the nature of the injuries that have been received by this lady, there is no doubt that the person that inflicted the injuries would have a significant amount of blood on them," police told media.

Authorities are appealing for anyone who may have seen anything unusual in the area to come forward.

"We're not ruling in anything or ruling anything out at the moment."

"A person we may believe is a significant witness in the matter was seen exiting the house and going through the yard next door so that's why it is a crime scene," Supt Rohweder said.

Police said they have also located some property at a nearby highway in relation to the matter.
