'They were my princesses': Mother's heartache after daughters drown in backyard pool

A heartbroken mother has described her desperate attempts to revive her two young daughters, who tragically drowned in the family’s backyard pool.

Renise Young jumped into the water to pull her girls out, after five-year-old son Aige raised the alarm at the Logan home in Queensland on Tuesday.

“They were helpless, it was devastating,” she said, fighting back tears. "No mother should go through this."

Ms Young said she and her husband Troy tried desperately to revive three-year-old Patricia and four-year-old Taya but the girls were pronounced dead at the scene.

“They were my princesses,” Ms Young said.

“They were always coming up to Mummy and Daddy and were giving us flowers telling us they loved us every day.

“I miss them so much, I miss them running around.”

The mother-of-five said the girls wandered out of the family’s Kingston home after lunch and into the backyard, where it’s believed they pushed a chair against the pool fence.

“They’ve gotten up on the chair and opened (the gate) and slipped and fell in,” Ms Young said.

The tragedy unfolded in a matter of minutes, with family, friends and complete strangers now comforting the devastated family.

“We’re here to support (Renise and Troy) as much as we can and you know they need help,” the girls’ grandfather Peter Young said.
