Passengers scramble to cover their faces as smoke fills Jetstar cabin

Passengers were forced to wrap clothes around their face when the plane flying from Sydney to Cairns filled with smoke, forcing an unscheduled landing in Brisbane.

A Jetstar spokesperson told Yahoo7 the Airbus A320 was diverted to Brisbane just after 4pm on Thursday after the plane encountered a technical issue with one of its engines.

The captain decided to switch off one of the engines as a precaution and divert the aircraft to Brisbane.

Smoke was filmed filling the cabin after the landing.

Terrifying footage of the incident shows smoke entering the cabin through the air conditioning unit as a flight attendant appears fearful as she tries to figure out where the strange sounds and smoke was coming from.

“The hazy smoke seen in the video happened when the aircraft had landed safely in Brisbane and shortly before the passengers disembarked," a spokesperson said.

Passengers on board the plane can be seen wrapping clothes around their face so they would not breathe in the smoke.

“While it’s rare for something like this to happen, our crew are trained to deal with these type of situations and they handled the situation very professionally," a spokesperson said.

The passengers were able to safely disembark at Brisbane Airport around 6pm local time.

A spokesperson said that an additional flight was mounted and all of the passengers are currently in Cairns.

Engineers are looking into the cause.
