Danish Prince Christian rescued from dangerous rip on Gold Coast beach

FIRST ON 7: The heir to the crown of Denmark and son of Australian-born Princess Mary was rescued from a dangerous rip while on holiday at a Gold Coast beach.

7 News can reveal Mermaid Beach lifeguard Nick Malcolm paddled out on his board on Thursday to save 10-year-old Prince Christian whoe was caught in dangerous surf.

The quick-acting lifeguard brought the young Count of Monpezat back safely to shore.

Mr Malcolm has kept a low profile since the royal rescue, but his supervisor told 7 News his actions likely saved Prince Christian's life.

"We got him before it got too serious, but he wouldn't have come back in," Stuart Keay told 7 News.

The lifeguards had no idea who the boy was until a bystander came up and told them.

"He's kept it pretty quiet, I'm sure we'll give him plenty of stick now we know," said lifeguard Shane Pierce.

Crown Prince Frederick personally thanked Mr Malcolm for the swift rescue of his son and Christian has already returned to waters at Mermaid Beach.
