‘She inspired me to start singing’: Cystic fibrosis sufferer who sings to fix her lungs meets her idol Taylor Swift

A young Queensland girl who suffers from cystic fibrosis has had her dream of meeting her idol Taylor Swift come true, thanks to an incredible social media campaign.

Ella Sinclair, 12, from the Sunshine Coast was flown down to Adelaide on Monday to meet the pop star, who she says has helped her manage her health through song.

“As soon as I heard her first song, I think it was maybe Love Story, I realised at that moment that I wanted to be like her, she inspired me to start singing” she told Yahoo7.

As a sufferer of cystic fibrosis, a condition which affects the lungs and digestive system, Ella has to do around three hours of physiotherapy every single day.

Singing helps Ella repair her lungs which have been damaged by several bacterial infections and also helps lift her spirits.

“All the breathing control you have to do when you sing gets my lungs healthy and trains them to breathe better.”

After her mother Rosalie Sinclair had no luck with her attempt to write to Swift’s management, she got the support of Cystic Fibrosis Queensland, who took Taylor’s dream to radio station 4BC and began an online campaign with the hashtag #ellameetstaylor.

The campaign, which was shared around the world, was aiming for Ella to meet the pop star backstage at her Brisbane concert, which was Ella’s third Swift concert, on Saturday night.

However as it was too late when Swift’s team got the message, they decided to make other plans.

Ella was told on Sunday that she and her mother Rosalie Sinclair would be flown down to Adelaide on Monday to meet Swift before her concert.

“I literally could not stop jumping and screaming I knew that it was going to happen but I couldn’t believe it till I actually saw her,” Ella said.

The 12-year-old said she was absolutely over the moon when she finally met Swift and received a hug from the pop star.

“She gave me a hug, she said I looked lovely and complemented my shirt, cause it had a picture of her on it, she said thanks for wearing my face on your shirt.

“She said thanks for coming to see me, then she took a photo with me and said I was so inspiring... and then I said she had been such an inspiration to me.”

“She was amazing, she’s such a kind person and you could just tell the way she talked to you and the way that she handled the whole situation that she was a lovely lady and had such a kind heart."

Her mother Rosalie, who also scored a hug from the pop star, said Ella wouldn’t have been able to live out her dream if it was not for the support of Cystic Fibrosis Queensland, 4BC and all the people who got behind the campaign.

“I really didn’t believe it was going to happen, it was such an incredible thing to ask for, I don’t think I actually believed it was going to happen tills she was right there before me.

“It’s been really amazing to get to meet someone that Ella finds so inspirational and to also in the process get to meet so many kind and supporting people.”

Ella, who says her favourite Swift song is Fearless, previously told 7 News that the artist inspires her each and every day.

“As soon as I hear that song (Fearless) I just think, she’s fearless I’m fearless I can be like her.”
