'Mother of all Toolies' on the Gold Coast, and on a mission

She looks lovely in the photos but Kathy Conley is not at Schoolies for fun. She’s here to keep an eye on her daughter.

“I’m like, no one messes with my girl,” Kathy said.

The 44-year-old has spent the week in Surfers Paradise, following her daughter Danni and her friends.

And she has been laying down the law to men who are too old to be Schoolies.

“Don’t be touching my girl, don’t be talking to her,” she said.

According to Danni, there was no escaping the protective parent.

“Everywhere you’d look, there would be Mum so you would try to change location again,” she said.

The girls took a break from Surfers today but another mum popped in to check on her daughter, Tia.

“My mother came down for me and I thought I’d do the same thing, and [my daughter] wanted me to,” Nicole Register said.

For everyone else the official gate crashers are the Schoolies volunteers and the police.

Last night some of them also became DJs.

Hundreds of Schoolies took up the offer of a quiet night on the sand but hundreds more were as loud as ever.

“It’s amazing, it’s fun, best week of my entire life,” one school leaver told 7 News.

Celebrations ended early for one Schoolie, who decided to ignite a deodorant can on Orchid Avenue, and set his backside on fire.

He spent the day in hospital being treated for burns.

“He was quite embarrassed, he didn’t tell us exactly what they were trying to do,” an ambulance officer said.
