Hail, rain, storms hit Brisbane

Brisbane residents have been battered by hail and rain as a large thunderstorm hits Queensland's southeast.

Dark clouds moved over the city just before 3pm on Tuesday after the Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the region.

The warning followed the detection of two severe thunderstorm cells tracking eastward from near Esk and Kilcoy respectively earlier in the afternoon.

"It's still moving eastward, it's still around," forecaster Kev Hutchins told AAP of the city-bound cell.

"It's a fairly large cell, too."

The storm area was about 50km in length from Caboolture down towards Logan, and encompassed the larger cell moving towards Brisbane's eastern suburbs and a second, smaller cell tracking towards Beaudesert.

The bureau had warned large hailstones could fall but Mr Hutchins said only small stones had been reported in Toowoomba and some Brisbane suburbs.

Morayfield and Burpengary had received 57mm and 26mm deluges since the cell hit the area, he said.

There have also been reports of flash flooding along the Pacific Motorway northbound near the Juliette Street overpass, RACQ said.

Energex also confirmed some 3100 customers were without power in the Brisbane city area, in particular across Nundah, Auchenflower, Taringa and Towong.
