How donating blood saved a woman's life

FIRST ON 7: A Queensland woman’s decision to donate blood has ended up saving her own life.

Terese Trinh went to give blood at a Red Cross donor centre in March 2014, when she was told by staff she needed urgent testing.

“It was actually on the spot that they told me you’re not fit to give blood today you might pass out,” she told 7 News.

Ms Trinh’s blood was sent off away for testing and it was discovered she had an aggressive form of Leukaemia.

Doctors say if she hadn’t gone to donate blood that day, her life expectancy would have been just four months.

The 34-year-old underwent four months of chemotherapy and blood transfusions and is now in remission.

She has now turned her attention to saving others, writing to thousands of Coles employees asking them to roll up their sleeves.

She hopes to inspire thousands more to donate blood.
