Locals brush with Captain Jack Sparrow

Actor Johnny Depp has stopped to snap selfies with locals on his way to the set of Pirates of the Caribbean in south-east Queensland.

The Hollywood heartthrob mingled with star struck residents at Raby Bay on Tuesday morning, where filming is underway.

Depp was decked in full costume and makeup and did his best pirate's grin for the cameras.

He chatted with fans before being whisked away to a custom-made ship about 5km off shore.

Depp, who has been in Australia since filming began earlier this year, has been reluctant to make public appearances in the past.

Earlier this month, his pet dogs Pistol and Boo were evicted from the country in a quarantine scandal that made headlines around the world.
