One in police custody after Bondi Beach lockdown

UPDATE: Police have confirmed a 28-year-old man is in hospital under police guard after he allegedly barricaded himself in an apartment block along a main street in Bondi Beach.

A police spokeswoman told Yahoo News the man was not armed at any stage in the incident.

They said the incident began about 4.40pm (Monday) when Police went to attend a unit on Ramsgate Ave, Bondi to arrest a man on a warrant.

The man refused entry to police and barricaded himself inside the unit.

"Police negotiators were called and assisted with the peaceful arrest shortly after 9pm," the spokeswoman said.

The 28-year-old man was taken to hospital for assessment and remains under police guard.

EARLIER: A man who barricaded himself in an apartment at Bondi Beach has reportedly handed himself over to police after a 4.5 hour standoff.

The alleged gunman was inside a third floor apartment on a main road in Bondi Beach

Authorities locked down the area as snipers reportedly took up position in nearby buildings.

Police told Yahoo7 the man is wanted on several outstanding warrants. They would not confirm he was wielding a gun at the time.

Police blocked off Campbell Parade between Wairoa Avenue and Brighton Boulevard.
