Flying Doctors father and son killed in 'murder-suicide'

Two men killed in a suspected murder suicide in Central Queensland on Tuesday were employed at the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

They have been identified as 24-year-old Tim McNaughton and his 53 year-old father Greg McNaughton.

The RDFS has confirmed Greg worked as a pilot with the organisation, while Tim was employed as an apprentice engineer.

Their bodies were discovered at a rural property north of Rockhampton around 10pm (AEST).

Police believe Tim shot and killed his father while they were target shooting, before turning the gun on himself.

A third man, Rockhampton senior base pilot captain Lindsay Hart, was also shot but managed to escape.

Detective Inspector Darrin Shadlow said the 53-year-old drove himself to a nearby property and called police.

He was taken to Rockhampton Hospital in a stable condition.

The bodies of Tim and Greg were located after a later search of the property.

In a statement, RFDS CEO Nino Di Marco said staff were deeply saddened and shocked by the news.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the families, friends and colleagues at this time and we ask that everyone respects their right to privacy and opportunity to grieve at this difficult time," Mr Di Marco said.

Det Shadlow confirmed the incident was being treated as a murder-suicide.

A rifle recovered from the scene was registered, he said.

A post-mortem examination will be conducted on the deceased men.

The property owner was home at the time of the incident and provided officers with a map of the land to help with their search.
