Gilly completes marathon trek

Former Maroons captain Trevor Gillmeister has triumphantly crossed the finish line of this charity trek from Townsville to Brisbane.

The rugby league great and his team of walkers used the 1,400 kilometre trek to raise awareness of the Asbestos Related Disease Support Society.

They need just another $36,000 to reach the $100,000 fundraising target, Gilly believes he will easily beat that.

Gillmeister and his team crossed the finish line in Brisbane just after lunch time today, braving the hottest conditions since January.

Gilly crossed the line at his old league club this afternoon.

"It's been a long month but we've had a great time," said Gillmeister.

The walk ended with a guard of honour where his rugby league career began, at the Norths Devils rugby league club.

Asbestos disease is a cause to Gilly's heart, as his father passed away nearly five years ago after suffering from mesothelioma.

He says the number of cases of asbestos related disease is under reported, and a meeting with Queensland's Attorney-General Jarrod Bleiijie is the next step in his awareness campaign.

"I feel I have an obligation now to get these people heard and do something about it for them," he said.
