New tallest building approved for Brisbane

The Brisbane City Council has approved a new twin-tower development, which could become the city's equal tallest building.

222 Maragaret Street will include one 90 storey tower reaching 274 metres, the city's maximum allowable height, and is set to contain more than 1100 residential apartments.

The tower could become the city's equal tallest building, as an 81-storey residential tower has been approved on George Street at the former law courts site.

It could also be become the third tallest in Australia, behind Q1 on the Gold Coast and Eureka Tower in Melbourne.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said the $1 billion dollar twin-tower project which also have a 42 storey tower including 316 hotel rooms and 95 apartments at 111 Mary Street.

Cr Quirk said the project is expected to generate 800 construction jobs and a further 650 local jobs once complete.

“It is a very high calibre and exciting project that will further define Brisbane as a new world city," said the Lord Mayor.

“Once constructed, the project will deliver much-needed modern long and short-term accommodation facilities in one of the most sought after locations in Brisbane and help address the shortage of hotel rooms in the CBD.

“The ground floor levels will feature retail, restaurant and bar tenancies, boosting the area’s daytime economy and benefitting residents, hotel guests and CBD workers.”

Local company Noel Robinson Architects has designed the twin-tower project and Director Noel Robinson said it will become one of Brisbane's most iconic landmarks.

Construction of the 222 Margaret Street is set to take place in three stages.

Stage four of the project will concentrate on 111 Mary Street.
