Dust devil strikes Queensland town

Repairs are being carried out on homes in Ipswich, Queensland, after they were struck by a dust devil.

A number of houses were damaged when roof tiles were torn away and debris was sent spinning into the air.

It lasted for little more than a minute but in that time the swirling winds that spun through Littleford Circuit at Bundamba yesterday afternoon ripped roof tiles from homes and sent foam from a construction site flying.

Resident Candice Matheson caught it all on video and said: “There was a massive noise and I ran out to my bedroom window and seen this almighty gust of wind - a garbage bin flying up the road - and I've run outside and this massive whirlwind is going down the street.”

The weather bureau says the wind phenomenon is commonly known as a dust devil.

Dust devils can occur anywhere in Australia, though usually during the warmer months - and it is very rare to see one of such intensity in suburban South East Queensland.
