Morcombes appalled NT won't release Cowan police interview

Four months after their son's killer was jailed for life, Bruce and Denise Morcombe continue to build Daniel's legacy.

But they're appalled that the Northern territory Government is refusing to release a police video interview with Brett Peter Cowan that may help keep him behind bars indefinitely.

Justice finally caught up with Cowan, serving a life sentence for the murder of 13 year old Daniel, but not all the details of his sordid past have been revealed.

A damning police interview with Cowan following his brutal attack on a six-year-old Northern Territory boy in 1993 is being kept secret.

"That intimate detail and certainly that vision has never been seen," Bruce exclusively told 7News.

"I think it's only fair that we have the opportunity to view that as do the whole of Australia if they wish."

The Northern Territory Director of Public Prosecutions has denied a 7News right to information request claiming it would be "an invasion of Mr Cowan's privacy".

"He's not entitled to rights, he should be exposed for the person he is," Bruce said.

"To release this vision will highlight perhaps an inadequacy in sentencing all those years ago."

Cowan's victim has consented to the release of the interview, while the Morcombes stress they're speaking out to protect others

"We hope that he's never released and we don't want another child to be murdered or molested," Denise said.

The Morcombes are still waiting to hear back from the Northern Territory, believing the interview would help defeat Cowan's expected appeal later this year.

As they continue their child safety campaign, the couple's sights are firmly on the future

"Denise and I are empty nesters so we're looking at the new challenges ahead," Bruce revealed.

They include Daniel's twin, Bradley's wedding in a couple of months, which is an exciting time for the family.

The Morcombes are also working on the release of a compelling book about their harrowing search for Daniel.
