Couple tied up in violent home invasion
Couple tied up in violent home invasion

An elderly couple in the Lower Hutt suburb of Wainuiomata have been terrorised by three balaclava-wearing men armed with baseball bats, police say.

The three men broke into the house in Hine Street just before 5am on Tuesday and tied the couple up before stealing a small safe containing cash, Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Thornton said.

The woman, in her 60s, was assaulted and suffered minor injuries. She had been treated by a doctor and was now recovering.

Mr Thornton said the woman's partner, in his 70s, later managed to get free and call police.

They were left shaken, Det Sen Sgt Thornton said.

"We are determined to catch whoever is responsible for this cowardly act, which was clearly targeted at an older couple in their home."

Anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area at the time was urged to contact police.
