One person is dead and four people, including two children, have been taken to hospital after a house fire in Hamilton.
Emergency services were called to the Holland Road house, in Fairfield, just before 4am.
It took 40 minutes for firefighters to bring the blaze under control, fire northern communications spokesman Steve Smith told NZ Newswire.
Firefighters were still at the scene five hours later dampening hot spots.
A body was discovered during a search of the home after the fire was put out.
"As a result an investigation into this unexplained sudden death is now under way," Detective Senior Sergeant Karl Thornton of the Hamilton CIB said.
Two adults and two children were taken to Waikato Hospital by ambulance.
It's believed there were 10 people in the house at the time the fire broke out.
Det Sen Sgt Thornton said a scene guard was in place and a joint fire service and police investigation into the cause of the blaze would start later on Wednesday morning.
