The teenager accused of stabbing Warren Rosillo to death outside a house in Pakuranga a year ago has entered a surprise guilty plea at the start of his trial in the High Court at Auckland on Monday.
The 18-year-old was convicted of murdering Mr Rosillo on July 29 last year and will be sentenced on September 24.
He is seeking permanent name suppression because of concerns about his safety in prison and there will be a hearing on suppression arguments on Friday, Fairfax Media reported.
Mr Rosillo was dead before emergency services arrived at Greenhill Crescent despite the desperate attempts of his friends to revive him.
The then 18-year-old moved to New Zealand from the Philippines at age 13. He was nicknamed "WOF" because he was so keen on cars.
