A 60-year-old New Zealand woman is fighting for her life in hospital after being shot in the head early on Saturday morning.
Police were called to Druces Road in Manukau, in Auckland's southeast, about 1.30am (11.30pm AEST) following reports of an assault.
The woman was rushed to hospital by ambulance, and a CT scan revealed a bullet was lodged in her head.
She is in a critical condition and will undergo surgery to remove the bullet, police say.
A 60-year-old man has been arrested and charged with assault over the shooting.
He appeared in the Counties Manukau District Court on Saturday and was remanded in custody to reappear on Monday.
Police say further serious charges are possible.
A gun and a shell casing have been recovered and police have interviewed witnesses to the alleged assault, but are not seeking anyone else.
