A Masterton mother faces child cruelty charges after allegedly handing her nine-year-old daughter a gun and telling her to shoot her stepfather after the girl claimed he had sexually abused her.
Earlier this year the girl approached her mother saying the man had touched her inappropriately, police told Fairfax.
However, her mother did not believe her and both her mother and stepfather gave the girl a gun and told her to shoot the man if the allegations were true.
It was not known whether the gun was loaded.
The pair were arrested on Thursday night and charged with cruelty to a child and unlawful possession of a firearm. The man has also been charged with indecent assault.
They are due to appear in the Masterton District Court next week.
Child, Youth and Family are involved and the child has been removed from the home and is staying with relatives, Wairarapa area commander Inspector Brent Register told Fairfax.
