Ten Queensland teenagers have been charged with attempted murder over an attack on a 17-year-old that left him in a coma fighting for life.
The victim was asleep when a gang of youths entered a Brisbane unit and set upon him about 3am on Saturday, police say. They then fled the scene.
The 17-year-old suffered horrific injuries.
"He is unconscious. He is in a coma. He has life-threatening head injuries," Detective Superintendent Tony Fleming told reporters after the attack.
He suggested rivalry between two groups of youths might be behind the crime.
"We suspect there is some form of potential retaliation between two groups of these young people," he said.
"But the reason for that could never justify what has been done to the victim."
The victim remains in hospital in a serious condition. No one else was injured at the apartment in Railway Terrace at Milton.
The 10 youths charged over the attack are all male, aged 15 to 19.
They have each been charged with attempted murder, grievous bodily harm and contravening an order to access information stored electronically.
They will appear in the magistrates court and the children's court in Brisbane on Thursday.
