A man and a woman tried to steal $1 million from the Queensland government by lodging false claims for grants meant to get people into jobs, police say.

A man, 51, and a woman, 43, are facing charges of fraud and attempted fraud after they allegedly ripped off the government's Back to Work grants program.

It's alleged they obtained $300,000 but lodged just over $1 million worth of false claims over the course of a year.

"It is disappointing there are those who we allege have taken advantage of programs such as this for their own gain at the expense of others in our community," Detective Superintendent Terry Lawrence said in a statement.

The man has already faced court, with the woman issued with a notice to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court at a later date.
