A woman charged with taking off with her twin daughters from Queensland four years ago has been denied bail.

The 45-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, on Monday faced two counts of child stealing in Brisbane Magistrates Court.

She was denied bail after a police prosecutor argued she should remain in custody after hiding from police and authorities for so long.

The children, from Townsville, were seven when they were allegedly abducted outside a school by their mother in April 2014 following a custody dispute.

They were found in Taree in regional NSW on Friday after a joint investigation by Australian Federal Police and Queensland Police.
