A man has been charged with attempted murder after a woman was stabbed at a hostel in Cairns.
The 36-year-old Wellesley Islander is alleged to have entered the Bunda Street hostel about 11am on Monday and approached the woman in the communal area, touching her inappropriately without consent.
When she called for help, police say, he assaulted her before taking a knife from the hostel's kitchen and stabbing her in the neck and arm as she tried to flee.
The man fled but was arrested a short time later.
He will face Cairns Magistrates Court on Tuesday charged with attempted murder, sexual assault and assault occasioning bodily harm.
The woman was taken to Cairns Base Hospital in a serious condition.
