A pedestrian has been killed in a suspected hit-and-run on Queensland's Sunshine Coast with the alleged driver charged over the fatality.

The 21-year-old victim was walking on Maroochy Boulevard when he was allegedly struck by a vehicle about 1.30am on Friday morning.

A 25-year-old Mooloolaba man has since been charged with dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death and leaving the scene of an incident without obtaining help.

Queensland Police Inspector Jason Overland described the incident as tragic.

"The Sunshine Coast is a very small place, there will be lots of people here on the Sunshine Coast waking up to this terrible sad news, and my heart breaks for the family that are involved," he said.

Police were responding to unrelated reports of a man on the road presenting a risk when they came across the more serious incident.

Mr Overland said the arrested man is on a working visa and the car involved is a small sedan.

He has been given bail to appear in the Maroochydore Magistrates Court on January 22.
